Making Progress Despite Holidays & Weather Delays
Over the past month or so since our last entry, progress has slowed quite a bit due to rain we've had almost every week. After even a little rain, our entire lot becomes a huge mud bog that can't be driven on without four-wheel drive. It takes 2 or 3 days to dry out, and then we get a day or two to work before more rain comes.
Even though it causes so many delays, it's hard to complain about the rain because of the severe drought we have been in since last spring. The lakes in front of our lot, which have been empty all year, are finally starting to fill back up, and all around North Texas, lakes, ponds, and the ground are beginning to look much better.
We also learned that the holidays are not a great time for construction as "all the Mexicans head south to be with their families," as we were told. Work pretty much came to a grinding halt between Christmas and New Year's, but it was kind of nice to be able to take a little break ourselves.
What we have managed to accomplish is getting our trim done, installation of all the cabinets throughout the house, completion of the staircase, locating and pulling the low voltage cables through the sheetrock, and burying the septic system.
One good thing the rain has provided is some time for shopping for lighting fixtures and hardware and for thinking about paint and stain colors. Since this is much more my thing than Randy's, he has pretty much turned over all of that type of stuff to me. He does reserve the right to veto anything he just can't stand, though! Fortunately, our tastes are fairly similar, and we've not had too many fights as of yet.
